It’s All About The Work

Welcome. The purpose of this online portfolio Phil Garrettis to foreground my online activities that support my professional life: teaching, filmmaking, storytelling, service, and interests. I am a Visiting Professor of Cinematic Arts at Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) where I teach courses including Advanced Time Based/Collaborative Projects, Visual Narrative and Storyboarding, Video I, Video II, and Design for Media. I also mentor MFA candidates pursuing research and creative activities related to the moving image. I began teaching at CCAD in the fall of 2012 and am excited about this new journey: working with and teaching art students and the opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration with professionals and artists across media and disciplines.

In addition to teaching, I am also a producer, writer, director, filmmaker, and video artist. My professional interests include cinema and moving image art, documentary, science fiction, speculative fiction, technoculture, new media, as well as intermedial, experimental, and devised theatre. Get in touch through the contact page, direct email or via Twitter.  (More information below the fold.)

The following video The Astronomer is one of my latest short films making the rounds. It has been submitted to festivals, has screened at the Columbus Moving Image Art Review, and was recently included in the Saturday Shorts program on the website Ain’t It Cool.

Teaching Backgound
In 2012, I left the Ohio State University where I taught as a full-time lecturer in the Department of Theatre for four years. While at OSU, I taught 25 sections of screenwriting and co-taught 12 sections of television production. I also taught as an adjunct at The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD) at Ohio State where I taught seven sections of Concept Development for Sequential Imaging, a course focused on conceptual, visual and story development as well as storyboarding.

Film/Video/Moving Image
I have been a professional in the film/video/moving image field for the past 14 years. My production experience includes live action and animation, studio motion pictures, independent films, documentary, visual effects, and commercials and includes projects at DreamWorks Animation, PDI, and Disney. Arbor Avenue Films is a production company I founded with John Whitney to make films focused on well-produced, creative storytelling. As co-writer and producer, our films have played festivals internationally, garnered awards, and received commercial distribution.

Master of Fine Arts Degree
On August 12th of 2012, I graduated with an M.F.A. in theatre. My work and research in focused on intermediality, directing, playwriting/new works, and performance. At OSU, I directed the Tennessee Williams play Talk To Me Like The Rain…And Let Me Listen in the Roy Bowen Theatre and worked on a number of OSU productions. Outside of OSU, I have worked in a variety of roles on productions including the world premieres of HOUSE/DIVIDED by the New York-based performance and media company, The Builders Association.
